Sherman Alexie's Smoke Signals

  1. While watching Sherman Alexie’s Smoke Signals I was honestly confused about whether or not they were making fun of the Indian culture or genuinely portraying it. I did not understand the scene where the two females were just casually driving down the road reverse. That scene is what made me think that they were somewhat making fun of Indians. Although we haven’t finished the movie in class yet we ended in class last Thursday during a very interesting part. Victor and Thomas are now on the road traveling to Arizona and Thomas tells Victor that he does not fit the Indian appearance of masculinity in their culture. In order to fit this role, Victor, I believe is going to change his appearance in this upcoming scene by unbraiding his hair and getting rid of that suit that Thomas continuously complains about. From my perspective I can see where this movie is going. Victor and Thomas are obviously going to become best friends during this road trip and Thomas is going to come to terms with his father leaving when he was a child. So far this movie just seems very weird and I’m not sure what the underlying theme is. Is this movie meant to make fun of Indians and their cultures and call them dumb in a round about way? Or is it genuinely trying to portray the Indian culture. I am sure we will talk about this more in class and discuss what is going on here.
